Re: Niantic shut down pokemon hunting sites

So can someone explain these pokevision sites to me cause I never heard of them until people complained they were shut down. How did they even work?

I have a friend who tried it out. From what I gathered, it would scan the area and tell you exactly where all the pokemon in the area were and how long they would be there, and then you could walk or drive to whatever you wanted to catch.

I was with him when he tried to use it the other night and we went chasing after a pikachu but it didn't even work, so I can't imagine being this upset that it's gone, though obviously the people who are upset had better experiences with it than I did.

My bro-in-law used it and it worked great for us.

The pikachu might have been in the river. It looked like we would find it going over the bridge, but maybe it was in the water. It didn't even come up in the "nearby" box though.

Basically you went to it and could look at a map of your city. It would display any spawned Pokemon in your area with a timer showing how long they would be there.

It looked like this.

How would it access that information?? Like, how would it know how long they were there?

Not sure to be honest. I know nothing about programing and all that stuff.

One of them was user-reported--if you find something cool, you tell the site where you found it. The others I know of all grabbed the information directly off Niantic's servers. I've heard sites like that can seriously slow down the servers they're taking from, but Niantic didn't complain about that specifically.

Ok, if this is true, it's the first I've heard of an actual legitimate reason for shutting it down.

It is like they are actively trying to destroy their own game. It is weird.

That isn't my city. I had to find a screenshot of a city that actually had Pokemon. If it was my city, there would just be a pidgey on there.
