Re: spoilers everywhere, obviously
I personally wasn't even that sad about the whole thing until the ending song. Because damn, both the lyrics and the fact that it was Billy Boyd singing it killed me. Because not only was it a very pretty song and very fitting for the movie, it also was a perfect song to end all the Tolkien movies with. And I didn't even really like the way they handled a lot about the Hobbit movies, but it still had this sad, melancholic end of an era feel to it and... bwah. (Sorry for rambling haha.)
Re: spoilers everywhere, obviously
I understand the “end of an era" feel because I was definitely more sad once the movies had ended, knowing there wouldn't be anymore live action Tolkien. And, yea, The Hobbit films did A LOT of things wrong, but that didn't stop me from feeling disappointed that the ride was over, and that PJ and company wouldn't have a chance to “do a better job next time”.
Hearing Billy's voice got me all choked up too, and really brought me back to the start. It was a smart decision on their parts to include him, and such a gorgeous song!
(However, I was sobbing during Thorin's death because I'm a sap, and I adored the tragic romance of Thorin and Bilbo. That relationship was one of the things I thought the films did right.)
