Inspired by #6

What show did you hold off on watching because the name was dumb/the premise seemed stupid/what you'd seen looked embarrassing....that you came to love when you finally watched it?

Game of Thrones. I am usually not a fan of fantasy stuff.

The Last Airbender.

I just wasn't super interested until like 2012. I should do a rewatch soon.

I got into that late too. I don't really know why though. There's nothing about it that would make me think it's not my thing.

Same!

I just remember as a kid rather watching Ying Yang Yo...which I just realized I never finished.

Oh man, me either! I'm so ashamed why, too, it was basically just snobbery about the anime-esque art style. (WHICH IS SO STUPID, but back then I had a chip on my shoulder about it.) I finally ended up watching it around the same time you did, with a friend, and I was embarrassed that I'd panned such a good show for such a stupid reason.

Same here. I really didn't get into it until a few years back (I had a thing about "pseudo-anime" art that went on for MUCH longer than it should have) and the fact that I thought Zuko looked kind of dumb (I don't know why) I feel kind of stupid for not getting into it earlier because it really is an awesome show.

Better Off Ted is a stupid, pre-prime-time filler material name for an extremely clever, funny show. I'm glad I gave it a chance and should have given it one sooner.

This happens to me all the time. I always start things late. Supernatural. Doctor Who. Buffy.

Not a TV show, but this was me with the Harry Potter books. I thought they were about prissy nerd doing magic and thought they looked so, so stupid. Then I read them, found out they were about a sweet angsty jock doing magic + so much more, and learned my lesson.

Elementary. A lot of the early buzz about it left me with the suspicion that they were only doing a female Watson to play up a potential romantic angle without the icky gay. Needless to say I was quickly disabused of this notion.

This interpretation always surprised me since Lucy Liu has never really played The Love Interest. I felt like the casting was an immediate signal of "we're not making this into a love story"
nightscale: Starbolt (Elementary: Joan and Sherlock)

I heard fandom freaking out about that but I didn't hear it from anywhere else and checked it out pretty much from the get go, because hey Lucy Liu solving crime with that dude from Dracula 2000, this could be good for a laugh. Plus I kind of like checking out Sherlock Holmes adaptations even if I'm not a massive nerd over the lore.

And I ended up really liking it so it was a win.

I was worried about that too, but I quickly grew to enjoy the show. It's some of the most thoughtful writing on TV in terms of character development.

I had sort of the opposite experience with Elementary: I heard so many good things, and what I saw on Tumblr looked really great, but when I tried to watch the first episode I just couldn't get into it. I tried twice, and something about the style, the pacing, or the acting just turned me off.

FWIW I thought the first couple episodes were a bit bumpy as the show tries to find its rhythm, but it got better as the season progressed. I'm glad I stuck with it.

I saw a couple of gifsets of Brooklyn Nine Nine floating about and I was curious but I thought I'd hate the humour or I'd find the characters dull but when I finally watched it I fell in love.

Holt and Amy are my loves. :3

I was definitely surprised how good B99 is.

This is really embarrassing, but....So NoTORIous (Tori Spelling's comedy from the early 2000s). I watched it only for Zachary Quinto, and stayed watching it because it was hilarious and surprisingly adorable.

I originally only watched Tomorrowland for Hugh Laurie and wound up really liking it.

Supernatural.

I just kind of looked at the hot guys and assumed they couldn't act, that it was going to be a dumb eye-candy show, and gave it a miss.

Netflix Scrotal Recall (Now called Love Sick in the US at least)

What?? Was it really called "Scrotal Recall"?

Merlin. Thought for years it was some kind of dark fantasy drama (with a Gwen/Arthur/Morgana love triangle as the main focus, thanks fandom osmosis). It seemed terrible.

Then I actually watched a few eps and discovered it's a comedy/adventure show with tons of ho yay and basically all the stuff I look for in a TV show.

Also Deadliest Catch. I watched ten minutes here and there and was always totally bored. Then it came up on Netflix and I ended up watching the whole thing and buying all the seasons.
