Books for kids ages 5-12

(Anonymous) 2016-08-01 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
My co-worker sent out a message that her daughter got a teaching job, and was seeking books to stock up a library in the classroom. Age range 5-12.

I am so out of touch with books, how do I know if a book I have is meant for that age range? What are your recommendations?

That is a HUGE age range. Like... Berenstain Bears to Stephen King age range... Is she going to be teaching all the ages in that range or is she just looking for some older aged books in case the kids are above their reading level?

SA

Adding to that, bookstores in my area separate the kids/pre-teen sections by age ranges, so if your stores do that (and even some online bookshops let you narrow down through age ranges) you should be able to find a good variety of books.

And how does this make you feel anon *arm chair therapist*

I think I started reading him around 15-16? Would have thought 12 is a bit young!

I diagnose you as a bored young teen who reads everything they can get their hands on!

I stopped after I read the misery. I got nightmares and my mum told on me to the library so I was banned from his bigger books until I was 17 😩 Probably a good thing, made me branch out to other books!

Anything from picture books to YA chapter books I would say. Sounds like they want literally anything marked for kids, so just go for that.

I think there's age recommendations on the back by the barcode.

Also; Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

If you don't mind propping up the Scholastic monopoly, they break down their books by recommended age category.

Also, you can find The Fantastic Family Whipple for like pennies (I bought the second book for about 5$ from Amazon).

I absolutely had a blast reading them and i'm p. sure they just budge into that age group.

Re: Books for kids ages 5-12 CORRECTION!

(Anonymous) 2016-08-01 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
GRADES 5-12! Not ages 5-12.

Thank you for your suggestion, and making me wonder if I read the e-mail right, and then searching online on how to connect to my work e-mail from home.

*Slaps self* Back to square 1. Shows how out of touch I am.

Try this for grade levels of books you already have http://www.scholastic.com/bookwizard/

Beyond that, um, I work with grades K-5, so I'm not sure whats popular with the older kids. Don't forget about graphic novels as well as non fiction. If you don't want the books she can't use returned to you,let her know she can pass on what she can't use to others.

Try looking up assigned reading for those grades at various schools.

Man that makes way more sense!!

Also gives you a better range - most YA books would be good (The Hunger Games, Enders Game, Percy Jackson, whatever new ones the kids are into these days), as well as more adult books. Maybe find an AP reading list online and see if you have anything on those.

Anything by Beverly Clearly, Judy Bloom, Paula Danziger, Avi, and Richard Peck.

I'd second the Judy Blume/Beverly Cleary suggestions and add Hardy Boys, Encyclopedia Brown and Babysitters Club.

You might also look at Robert Heinlein, for any budding scifi geeks. Maybe some of the Star Wars books, either the more standalone character novels and movie novelizations or the smaller series from the 90s, before the EU got huge (and then abandoned. The Thrawn trilogy, Jedi Academy trilogy, Young Jedi Knights, etc..

I liked The Secret of Platform 13 by Eva Ibbotson in that age range. (4th or 5th grade)

And, having just seen your correction, I loved The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares, which I read at 10, although it's maybe meant more for 12-15 year olds.
