Re: Books for kids ages 5-12

I'd second the Judy Blume/Beverly Cleary suggestions and add Hardy Boys, Encyclopedia Brown and Babysitters Club.

You might also look at Robert Heinlein, for any budding scifi geeks. Maybe some of the Star Wars books, either the more standalone character novels and movie novelizations or the smaller series from the 90s, before the EU got huge (and then abandoned. The Thrawn trilogy, Jedi Academy trilogy, Young Jedi Knights, etc..
