When I was a teen, I think my parents were secretly terrified I was going to develop an eating disorder (I don't know why, I wasn't doing anything that would make them think I might - I guess that was just the teen problem they decided to freak out about). In what I assume was an attempt to counteract this, they started calling me skinny and a toothpick. My friends started doing it too. You might think this would be flattering, but, thanks to the body issues I actually did have, all I heard was "Hi, you are flat chested!" which is not something teen girls who feel like unattractive dorks want to hear. Also, sure I was kind of thin, but not skinny enough anyone would really remark on it (I was also not in good shape at all athletically). Just kind of average-skinny. I had a bit of a belly. I was really annoyed that people were teasing me without getting their facts straight. I felt like they weren't really *seeing* me.
