Re: What is the most hurtful thing ever said to you?

When my grandmother saw me snacking a bit one night after dinner and told me I should watch what I eat because I will blow up.

Mind you, at the time I weighed 115 lbs (I'm now about 120 lbs, so really not a noticeable difference), and I had eaten THREE 90 CALORIE CHEWY BARS!!!

It's become a family joke now, but I was really hurt at the time.

When I was 14 or so my mom came into my room after I'd gone to bed and said, very angrily, "Girls are supposed to have waists."

Now I can see what a petty thing to say that was, but at the time I was heartbroken.

Especially at that age! I can't imagine my mom ever saying something.

My grandmother loves to throw little digs at us. Same with my grandfather.

For my grandfather's 80th birthday, my mom, sister and I flew in to surprise him (my dad was already there, so he picked us up at the airport). When we showed up at my grandfather's house, it was the day after his birthday. He said to my mom that he didn't think it was unusual that he hadn't gotten a birthday card from us because the birthday cards are always late.

Thanks grandpa!

Yowch. I don't care how petty that was, that was really awful.

When I was a teen, I think my parents were secretly terrified I was going to develop an eating disorder (I don't know why, I wasn't doing anything that would make them think I might - I guess that was just the teen problem they decided to freak out about). In what I assume was an attempt to counteract this, they started calling me skinny and a toothpick. My friends started doing it too. You might think this would be flattering, but, thanks to the body issues I actually did have, all I heard was "Hi, you are flat chested!" which is not something teen girls who feel like unattractive dorks want to hear. Also, sure I was kind of thin, but not skinny enough anyone would really remark on it (I was also not in good shape at all athletically). Just kind of average-skinny. I had a bit of a belly. I was really annoyed that people were teasing me without getting their facts straight. I felt like they weren't really *seeing* me.
