I generally try to separate the person from the fic....but if they love Trump I can't really blame you.

This is about what I came here to say.

Question: how do you even know a fic writer's political preferences? I've literally never seen anyone mention it in a fic.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Social media like tumblr/facebook/twitter, presumably.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but if you follow the author's tumblr, it's kind of hard to miss sometimes. It was the same back in the lj days, too, except the politics were less "I want a wannabe Bond villain to be a world leader" and more "I don't believe in gay people."

There's someone on my LJ flist who can't control her tendencies to wax romantic about her great hero Trump. She's also an Ayn Rand libertarian, though, so this isn't surprising.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I have the same thing, and this goes for the book authors too. The less I know about them, the better. I can't judge the text on its own merits anymore if I feel too strongly about its writer and their politics/worldview.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Anne Rice was one of those for me. The more I knew about her the less I can stand her work. Why I also try to not learn to much about actors, musicians ect. At times I have trouble separating them from their work.

I don't think it's particularly unusual to stop enjoying an author when you find out you have incompatible views.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-03 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
However, unlike with a professional author or artist, you're not actually paying the fan writer any money for their work. Reading their stories doesn't funnel money to a cause you hate or in any way endorses their life choices.

If anyone supports Trump or Hillary, then I drop them like a bad habit.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-03 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Why? It's better to at least throw yourself behind one of them than just be a fucking no-vote and then still complain when shit doesn't go your way. Surely one of them is more compatible with your views than the other.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I could see this if they're a staunch Trump supporter.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-03 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I kinda feel the same way. If a fic author or fan artist supports Trump or is pro-life, I drop them like a bad habit.

Literarily all of fandom is pro-democrat. I have legit never seen a republican in any fandom, unless they are hiding.

I assume (which may be wrong of me) that most of the fics I enjoy are written by those to the left of the political spectrum. I'm a Republican. (YIKES!) So if I limited myself to those who won't vote Hillary I'd be in for a long, dry spell. I'd rather not read too much political advocacy from the authors but they have every right to express themselves through their fics and through their blogs/social media. I've never held it against any author.

I decided not to trade Animal Crossing villagers with someone because she was hugely anti-feminist and had a huge rant about how terrible women who used birth control were on her profile, so... I wouldn't blame you!

(Anonymous) 2016-08-03 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
How come she had time for fandom with her no doubt enormous brood of kids?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-03 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
As I conservative in fandom, I sympathize, but I completely got over it because I disagree politically with the vast majority of fandom and ... you get used to it. :p Unless the person is advocating murder or generally nasty (and I don't mean 'I like Trump! Go capitalism!' for reference, but more stuff like, 'I wish Bernie supporters would die, go kill yourself'), I let it go.

Half of the country disagrees with the other half. As long as they can be civil about it, I'm happy.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-03 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
*hi-fives* If I confined my media consumption to only that media created by people who agree with me politically, I'd have very little media to consume.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-03 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Everything is politics.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-03 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm... I'm interested to find out what their political views are because my experience in fandom literally everyone was pushing for Bernie but settling for Hilary just so Trump doesn't win. So if there were some legit Trump supporters out there in fandom, that is a rare find.

And yeah, I'd kinda side-eye Trump supporters too. Every time I see them talk on my local news, I have the impulse to throw myself out the nearest window.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-03 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
What's stopping you? By all means, do us all a favor.
