Looking at this picture, I'd have thought the guy on the left was in his fifties.

Shiro actually looks a lot younger in his first appearance, which I think was only chronologically a year or two before this. He was taken prisoner by the evil alien empire and strongly implied to have been tortured as well as medically experimented on during his captivity. When he reappeared, he had the white hair and scar as well as a prosthetic arm.
