Shiro was revealed by the show's creators to be 25, and he is the only paladin that is an adult. They said Hunk, Keith, and Lance are late teens (so I'm guessing around 17) while Pidge is 14. I mean, I wouldn't judge anyone for shipping it, although I prefer Shallura, but this SJW Tumblr we're talking about, so they are acting like shipping this is supporting pedophillia or whatever.

Was there an official age reveal? Not that it would bother me either way.
I'm very glad I only passively ship them and wouldn't touch the fandom with a ten foot pole though.

(Though honestly, I've had to pretty much block the fandom since the reveal because random pedo accusations are actually pretty triggery for me. In the 'yeah, I spend about six hours shaking and and feeling sick' sort of way. But it feels good when those same people who enjoy hurting people like me for my 'own good' get theirs. )

I thought it was pretty obvious that Shiro was an adult and the others were teens. They were in academy, whereas he was clearly established in his career? Plus, even fandom agrees he's taken on the older brother/dad role among the group.

Like why the heck would Shiro only be eighteen or something, seriously.

It's not a big gap when you're an adult, but I can see being squicked by it because the younger half is that young-- for a lot of people, 17 is underage, and even when it's not a legality question and not a matter of the older half being remotely pedophilic, I mean... Like, I've known couples with that age gap AT that age, and there are kind of two ways I've seen it go.

The best and healthiest didn't have the common problems of the older half abusing a position of social power or just taking advantage of having eight more years of life/love experience, but the people involved had different sets of cultural touchstones and that was really the difficult thing. Had they both been older, they wouldn't have been so divided on that, but it's kind of a crucial point for a gap like that. 25's not that old, but when you're 17, the 8 year gap between you and a 25 year old is nearly half of your own age. Meanwhile, a 25 year old and a 33 year old would have the same size gap, but it doesn't feel as big.

Not saying fictional ships need to be affected by real world concerns, of course, just that I can see how some people wouldn't feel they could get past it.

I was never really in the fandom so I don't know if it got any shippers up in arms, but it reminds me of Tsuritama where Akira, who looks the same age as the teenage cast, is 25. It isn't helped by the fact that he somehow attends high school with them.
