In the novel "American Gods", the main character, Shadow, is a bodybuilder. It's not talked about much. He doesn't even work out during the book but the first paragraph is:

"Shadow had done three years in prison. He was big enough and looked don't-fuck-with-me enough that his biggest problem was killing time. So he kept himself in shape, and taught himself coin tricks, and thought a lot about how much he loved his wife."

There's a bit more to it but that's not the main thrust of the book. Even so, he's described as a big dude.

I think the key phrase here is "big enough". If he were a big guy, Gaiman wouldn't have qualified it with "enough". To me, that suggests that while Shadow isn't enormous, he's in good enough shape and large enough that he's not a tempting target.

Big enough in that context implies bigger than most of the other people in the situation who would mess with him.

I always thought that a serious version of Dwayne Johnson - like, from Walk Tall - would be a great casting choice.

Dwayne and Vin Diesel were both heavily mentioned in the fandom when the book came out. Ricky Whittle isn't as racially ambiguous as either of those men but he fits... Except that he's so lean. He looks like a model, not an ex-con.

Sorry, I don't agree that's what it implies. If Gaiman had meant "bigger than", he likely would've used that phrase since it's an obvious choice. The fact that he used "big enough" implies just the opposite-- that he's not a gigantic dude a la The Mountain, but that he's maybe only just large enough where people think twice about picking a fight.

Don't get me wrong, Dwayne Johnson would've been an excellent choice, but I don't think Shadow needs to be an enormous guy and unlike the OP, I'm not invested in the bodybuilder aspect of the role because it's extremely trivial to the story and the character.

Oh, no, I got that when I read the book, I was more referring to you saying that you had read the book because you had heard that Shadow was a bodybuilder. It's just kind of a different angle on things, I guess? And I'm interested in what you mean by that?
