Olympics Thread!

(Anonymous) 2016-08-04 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
So the 2016 Olympics opening ceremony is tomorrow, and the football competition has already started, so I figured I'd make a thread.

Looking forward to it? What sports are you most interested in? Fav athletes? Hopes & expectations? Controversial takes?

I stopped watching the Olympics a few years ago when I learned what they mean for the host country and particularly for the poor people of that country.

Yeah, it's a pretty comprehensively shitty organizational and financial thing. I still enjoy watching the competition itself, though.

I really wish they'd just hold it at the same site in Greece/somewhere guaranteed to be cold every time.

But where are the corrupt backroom deals and golden handshakes and money laundering in that, I guess.

Greece in August is the opposite of cold, though. Also, Greece is more than broke so hosting just the Olympic Games just once would probably break their neck entirely by now.

Yeah I mean the winter Olympics would obviously have to be held elsewhere, but the anon below summed up about how a permanent site could help Greece's economy better than I could.

Holding it at the same site in Greece (for the non-winter Olympics) actually sounds like it might help the Greek economy, because it would lead to lasting infrastructure improvements rather than a spending bubble that drained resources from poor areas and people to build temporary structures. And Greece's economy needs all the help it can get. I tried looking up Greece's mountainous areas to see if there was enough snow to support the Winter Olympics being held there as well, but it looks like most of the mountain ranges there are only reliably snowy in the areas that are part of other countries like Bulgaria and Albania. But yeah, too much money to be made in corruption. Sigh.

Good luck with that. There's already been kidnappings.

I usually end up watching the competitive swimming because I did it for so many years, but other than that, nothing really.

Controversial take? Uh... here's hoping the open water swimmers don't turn into sewage zombies.

Probably going to try and follow basketball, boxing, tennis, and track & field stuff generally.

And then also probably women's wrestling and women's rugby. Is that too weird and creepy? I hope it's not too weird and creepy.

Re: Olympics Thread!

(Anonymous) 2016-08-04 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
It's wasn't, but then you asked twice whether it was creepy and that made it sound creepier than it is.

I'll probably watch the gymnastics with my mom because we've been watching them together (and with my grandmother when she was alive) so it's become a bit of a tradition.

That's the only thing I watch because I don't care about sports and competition but I'm in awe of the things gymnasts can do with their bodies.

And then we watch figure skating in the winter. I'm always so impressed at their skills.

Swimming mostly. I used to watch gymnastics but after the Australian Olympics, I'm too scared something will go wrong. I always feel so bad for any of the athletes if they screw up, which makes it hard to watch.

I also like to catch the random small sports that are on the side-networks. I'm always introduced to something new.

I hope no one gets Zika. Or stabbed. Unless someone already has.

The only ones I'd really look forward to are gymnastics and diving. I'm not much for sports usually, but those are just awesome to watch.

I wish that they would have stood their ground and kept Team Doping aka the Russians out of the games, but no such luck.

Looking forward to gymnastics, volleyball (regular and beach), and swimming. Women's football has already started and I'm enjoying it very much, although I miss Japan.

I don't keep up with sports much but I'll probably check-out the gymnastics, athletics and swimming.

I'm least looking forward to the global spread of the Zika virus immediately after the olympics.
