It doesn't really. It just starts getting mentioned.

And there are so many different views on hell too. Not all views on it involve torture or anything like that. A lot of stuff I hear from hardcore Christians I know talk about it as just the absence of God, that's supposed to be the worst possible thing, and anything bad happening there would be people doing it to themselves or others.

nayrt - I suspect that the hardcore Christians like to downplay Hell in the Bible as the whole "absence of God" thing because it sounds less torturey and because the whole burning lake of fire thing makes God sound like a psycho. But it's totally in the Bible, so...
