Ok, this has a trigger for rape

Ok, in a rape recovery fic with a male as the victim, what issues would you find interesting to read about? What's something I'll probably forget but might be important to put in?

It's obviously still very much fanfic, and a h/c fest, but I still would like my characters to be somewhat realistic.

I think that on top of the usual sexual abuse survivor horribleness men have some other issues too. Help is generally less available (long travel times to find rape crisis centres that deal with men for example) and societal pressures about what men are supposed to be/be able to deal with hinder recovery.

How would you like to see those societal pressures play out? Orr how do you think they would?

Honestly, I probably wouldn't like seeing those societal pressures play out at all. It'd make me bawl my eyes out.

Perhaps the character assumes the people in his life will be less sympathetic because rape is something that's often classed as a crime against women, but the people in his life are actually supportive?

It's sort of meant to be bawl-worth at times. Thank you so much for your advice.

It's my understanding that male rape survivors are more likely to turn to violence as a coping mechanism, and it's always interesting when the author adds that element instead of just turning him into a stereotypically weepy sad sack (which I don't think fits most female survivors, either...).

I have not read about that. Violence in general, or violence towards their abusers?

In general.

DA I've never heard that. Do you have a study or citation? My sexual abuse certainly made me angrier (I'm a woman) but it never made me violent towards anyone but myself.

Can't remember where I read it, sorry, but the Wiki article on Rape Trauma Syndrome states:

extreme anger and hostility (more typical of male or masculine victims than female or feminine victims[12])

With respect to coping mechanisms.

That a large number of people don't believe that's possible comes to mind.

Personally, when I read rape recovery fics I loathe excessive angst. Doesn't mean the characters aren't allowed to go through the motions. Just... don't wallow in self-pity, or pity in general. (I'm an abuse survivor btw, so I may be biased.)
