Re: Inspired by #4
(Anonymous) 2016-08-05 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)Well first let me establish that I think Harry is canonically bisexual.
There are lots of tiny hints where he at the very least finds some members of the male sex good-looking. Attractive even, going by the words he uses in the books. Cedric, Tom (multiple occasions even), Bill and Sirius. On occasion, even young Dumbledore. These people are linked by good hair, while Harry himself is extremely self-conscious about his own unruly hair. The first thing other people notice about Harry and comment on? Aside from his scar, it's his eyes and him being skinny. But Harry dgaf about those two things.
The few girls Harry describes as attractive - Cho, Ginny, Fleur - all have pretty hair. And the first time he takes notice of Hermione? At the Yule ball, when her hair is pretty for the occasion. Other people notice Hermione's attractiveness, too, but after the Yule ball, after Hermione has gone back to her old self, Harry doesn't spare her much thought for her beauty unlike some others.
Oh, and let's not forget what Harry's Amortentia smells like: Ginny's hair. Right after he decides he has a crush on her.
So what's Ron got to do with this?
During his first year, when he's boarding the Hogwart's express, he takes notice of the Weasleys and their bright red hair. Like Hedwig and Hagrid, red hair (Weasleys, Lily) is his link to the wonders of the magical world.
It's obvious he seeks out to become Ron's friend from the moment they introduce themselves to each other. Hermione makes a brief appearance but he doesn't really reach out to her despite her obvious vast knowledge of the wizarding world (which Harry is dying to know more about). Why? Because she unintentionally insulted Harry's new knight in shining armor, Ron the Gallant.
Well actually, Ron's pretty pitiful in Harry's eyes, with his sad sandwhich and hand-me-down inventory, nor is he very smart it seems. But Harry already likes Ron due to Ron's easy-going nature... And the hair. Dun dun dunnnn
Fron that point on, every Weasley has Ron's hair.
It doesn't take long before the duo becomes the trio, but Harry seems to always be unconsciously drawn more into Ron than Hermione. Ever notice how it's always Ron & Harry or Ron & Hermione? Never Harry & Hermione until late into the third book.
This doesn't really become noticeable until the Firebolt incident. Ron takes Harry's side, and to say Harry feels grateful would be an understatement. Boy is crushing hard. Even though Hermione has a point, Harry insists on keeping Ron on the pedestal of his dreams even after we learn about the broom's true origins.
So what about Ron's "availability"?
It's kinda obvious Ron and Hermione have feelings for each other; since the first book really.
In the fourth book Ron is crushing on Krum (admit it) but things turn sour when Ron realizes that there might be something going on between Krum and Hermione, the girl he loves. Love trumps a silly (obsessive) crush, obviously.
It's kind of a wake up call for Harry, wherein Harry realizes nothing will come between Ron and Hermione. (Except Lavender because Ron's a dick.)
He crushes on Cho, but it's kinda telling he still pines for Ron after he and Ron fight. When they finally make up he's beyond ecstatic at having his redhead back, but realizes it would never work between them.
Come fifth book, he's ready to move on to greener pastures with Cho. But Cho isn't fun like Ron, Cho doesn't make him laugh like Ron. Cho doesn't have red hair like Ron-- er, I mean Ginny.
Ginny who previously Harry has all but verbally confirmed as the girl version of Ron. At first he doesn't think about Ginny's dating life, but when it becomes apparent Ginny shares more than just physical traits with Ron, he's all up in that grill. She's funny and easy-going. She's awesome at Quidditch and better at it than Ron. (I also have a theory that Harry went along with becoming the Gryffindor seeker because Ron was obsessed with Quidditch, but I'll spare you the essay.)
Harry likes her, but he doesn't need her like he needs Ron (just look at the entirety of their relationship in Deathly Hallows).
Best part about dating Ginny though? He'll never have to let go of the Weasleys, the closest thing he has to a real family. And if he and Ron fight, that doesn't mean they'll never see each other again.
It's obvious that Harry loves Ginny, but she'll never beat the original Weasley.
(Plus I kinda get the feeling Harry's and Ginny's relationship isn't exactly... equal. I mean, would you let your kids be named Albus Severus and James Sirius? I mean really.)
Even if JKR meant for Ginny and Harry to be endgame from the start, lbr, JKR can't write romance for shit.
I've always thought JKR saw Hermione as an extension of herself, and Ron as the extension of the dude she used to be in love with (hence why Ron and Hermione end up together even if they're dysfunctional; it's pure wish-fulfillment). So JKR writing about Ron is all from Harry's POV, but some of JKR's love for Ron kinda bleeds into Harry's consciousness. If that makes sense?
Hermione is JKR's proxy, and Ron is JKR's old sweetheart's proxy, but JKR is Harry's proxy, so therefore Harry sees Ron as JKR sees her old sweetheart. It's all very... Inception-y.
Disclaimer: I totally understand why people would not agree with me, and my theory can only be applied to the bookverse. The movieverse leans heavily towards Harry/Hermione, Harry/Ginny and even Harry/Luna. Harry's and Ron's relationship takes a backseat. (Some of Ron's lines and scenes go to Hermione, and the last director totally shipped Harry/Hermione, which further illustrates my point about the books.)
Uh. Yeah. That's about it, really. I could've included passages from the books but let's not.
Re: Inspired by #4
I'll admit my ulterior motives are that Ron's my favorite (he reminds me a lot of myself) and I wanted to hear about this idea of Harry being in unrequited love with him. Because...why wouldn't he be? I love Ron/Hermione, but honestly I love anything where Ron gets the love I think he deserves. /selfish
This is some serious in-depth analysis, and I really appreciate you laying it out for me. And I agree about the Harry/Ginny relationship never being equal. I do think it's massively fucked up that all of their children are named after the loved ones Harry lost. (I also personally feel naming your children after the deceased to honor them...is iffy. Middle names in honor are fine, but naming children after deceased loved ones feels to me like it'd put a lot of pressure on those children to be carbon copies of their namesakes, negating their individuality.)
