Re: Character with Good Fandoms
(Anonymous) 2016-08-05 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)God ughhh I hate this shit so much. The people who spout this shit are always low-key girlhaters. I'm not an Ariel fan myself but I will defend her actions and her rights to autonomy til the day I die.
I think Ariel-hate really hit its peak around the time Tangled was released. I actually remember this very well... Some people were unhappy that we got yet another blonde Disney princess, but the counter-argument was how Rapunzel was a good role-model and therefore hair color shouldn't matter (valid point, but people were arguing about representation, etc).
So anti-Rapunzel people argued how she wasn't a good role-model because she recklessly ran away from home.
Rapunzel stans disagreed, and to illustrate their point they pointed fingers at Ariel and went "hey look at this bitch right here! What a reckless, spoiled little girl amirite?"
The irony being here that Ariel and Rapunzel are extremely similar and both ran away from home. Most failed to realize that the only separating factor is the fact that Rapunzel was accompanied by a man. Jasmine didn't get involved, I guess due to her ethnicity (just think of the potential racewank) and because her bid for freedom failed.
I guess Ariel fans recognize Ariel's need to be independent and trying to make it in the world on her own (throwing your status and riches in hopes of achieving a life-long dream of having legs), despite the odds being stacked against her. (And realistically it shouldn't work.)
And so that, I think, breeds optimism and patience in her fans.
Re: Character with Good Fandoms
The friend seemed taken aback, as if she'd never even considered that they both run away from home (one from an abusive parent and one from a parent with abusive tendencies) and that while a man entering their lives is the impetus that encourages them to actually fucking get up and go, they've both clearly longed to leave for ages.
(Also, The Little Mermaid was my favorite Disney movie prior to Tangled's release. With Aladdin & Mulan coming 2nd and 3rd. Though admittedly, child me really missed the point. I loved it so much because I wanted to be a mermaid to escape not fitting in on land.)
