Does anybody remember....

(Anonymous) 2016-08-05 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Describe that thing you can almost remember, but can't think of the name/haven't been able to find on the internet. Maybe somebody else remembers it! (Mine below.)

Short version: older movie about family drama on Australian ranch; dog named Thunderwith ???

Long version: so a long time ago my family watched this movie we got out from the library about a family living on a ranch in Australia, a mom and dad and two kids, I think. The movie started out with the little boy almost getting bitten by a poisonous snake. Then it turned out the dad had a teenage daughter, her mom had died/couldn't keep her anymore/was generally not a great person, iirc, so the (half)daughter came to live with the family. There was a lot of friction with the wife, and the daughter felt out of place, but she had this dog: he showed up during a thunderstorm or something, so she called him Thunderwith (I'm almost certain that's right even though it sounds really wrong). At the end of the movie, the dad was away and there was some big crisis--the mom got hurt, or something, and there was a storm? And the daughter saved the day.

DOES ANYBODY REMEMBER THIS MOVIE. probably made in the 70s or 80s based on my memory of the quality/style?

I had that book, originally named "Thunderwith", I don't know if I still have it. From what I recall off the top of my head, the main character was girl whose mother died and was living with her father and step-mother? She came to befriend a dog who she called Thunderwith (because she first saw him in a storm so he came "with thunder"). She also had problems with a school bully who lived on the farm next door and tried to pressure her into giving her lucky American silver dollar. Thunderwith turned out belong to his family and I think he shot the dog?

It has been a good several years since I read it though, this was book I got from a mail-order catalogue run through schools (as in they handed the catalogues out in class and kids could bring in money and order books).

Also, the book was probably from the 80s. I know the time in which I got it was either 1989 or 1990 and I don't think it was an old book by then.

Weird french children's story

(Anonymous) 2016-08-06 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I've got one! (Obviously.) In a French class as a kid, I read/listened to a story about a little girl whose mother tells her to go to school, or she might be kidnapped by a man whose name sounded like "creepy-leese." (I forget the spelling, just remember how the tape said it.) There was even a song, but I forget it. Anyway, she's found by him, and he was a giant whose head might have looked like fruit; his hair looked like spaghetti. I haven't been able to find it anywhere.

I once watched a Canadian (or at least I think it was Canadian) show about haunted clothes. That's literally all I can remember.

It wasn't the Australian series, Round the Twist, was it?

A movie where a woman goes to jail. She creates a shiv out of a toothbrush that she used to kill a guy (possibly the reason she was in jail). I think a road was a big part of the movie.

Book about a reality warping mobster's son?

[personal profile] aenrhien 2016-08-06 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Kid's name was Vinnie, he got powers that let him see and exist in different versions of reality when he was in a car accident with his best friend, whose name I can't remember and that he wasn't very friendly with through the book. His friend had powers too, I think, I just don't remember what they were. I think they lived in Boston, or maybe Jersey. Somewhere a bunch of Italian-Americans would stereotypically be and the mob wouldn't be thought twice of.

If the premise of reality warping mobsters wasn't so weird, I wouldn't still be trying to find this book again 5 years later.

I was thinking of a thing like this the other day and meant to post about it somewhere online but now I can't think of what it is...grrrr.

Anyway, the one I CAN think of:

It's a YA book about a lake. There's a picture of a lake on the cover, and I think it has lake in the title. Everybody that lives near the lake gets really sick or dies or something, and at first it seems like the lake is haunted/cursed, but it turns out it was contaminated by some chemical or something. In retrospect, it definitely had a pretty heavy environmental message, and I'm kind of curious to see what I'd think if I reread it as an adult.

Anybody know?

Is it "The Lake at the End of the World"?

That's the one I was wondering too.

ayrt

Possibly! Reading a synopsis, the plot sounds different than what I remember (there was nothing about people living underground, it wasn't an end of the world type thing, there was just this one lake that was poisoned because of some corrupt corporation or something) and none of the covers I can find pictures of online are the one I remember having (although it's possible the one I had just isn't shown online anywere, I got it from a library sale so it could've been a special library edition or something, maybe).

All that said, it's probably been close to 20 years since I read it, so it's entirely possible that I'm remembering things wrong (and/or confusing it with other things). Either way, thanks! I'll definitely have to look into it more, and maybe see if I track down a copy.

Short story, possibly by Robert Heinlein, about a guy who is on Mars in the future and meets a martian in a kind of time warp from the past and both see the other in their own time only the martians culture died off ages ago and both are very confused why the other can't see the "real" world that they see ie Mars as it looks in their respective times. Both think the other is crazy and try to convince each other that he's not seeing the real world. Then they go on their respective ways thinking how odd that was. Read it years ago, can't remember the title.

That's one of the short stories in Ray Bradbury's "The Martian Chronicles", iirc. Those are all over pre-, during, and post-contact/cohabitation between Earthlings and native Martians.
