They're guaranteed to embarrass themselves - every Westerner is, no amount of preparation is enough for Japan's etiquette standards - but they'll probably have a good time. The standards are bitten back behind tight smiles for people they know will be leaving soon.

The Japanese know that tourists aren't going to remember to change out of the bathroom slippers, use the chopstick rests or keep left on the street every single time. They wish tourists WOULD, but they aren't going to ruin some weebshitter's vacation over it. Welcome to politeness.

What makes that difference from any tourist in any other locale in the world, is my question. Why does it have to be linked to the uniquely polite culture of Japan
