They're guaranteed to embarrass themselves - every Westerner is, no amount of preparation is enough for Japan's etiquette standards - but they'll probably have a good time. The standards are bitten back behind tight smiles for people they know will be leaving soon.

Yeah, there are a few het pairing wars that seriously out-ridiculous any slash equivalent, and the Avatar wars definitely rank up there.

While I wasn't really into either pairing, I was more repulsed by Katara/Aang, because Aang is a prepubescent kid, and Katara's interest felt mostly big-sister-ish until then. I felt it would've been much more appropriate to have none of them "get together" at the end. That last kiss felt cringey and awkward. And then you could let fans ship how they like (well, at least until the sequel series).

I think when people talk about the 'migratory slash fandom', they're probably complaining less about the fact that fans migrate, and more about the recurrence of particular tropes, styles of fanwork, and patterns of fannish behavior from one fandom to another, because they don't care for those particular things.

But I agree that the migration, in itself, doesn't invalidate the fandom of people involved - and there are definitely people who imply that it does, which is frustrating.
