OP, your headcanon makes perfect sense in the light of your experience. I totally get it. *hugs*

I'm pretty sure my late father loved me (at least, he loved me as much as he was capable of loving anyone), but he was not at all demonstrative, verbally or otherwise. After he died, a neighbour lady told me he'd recently said to her, "My daughter is the one thing I did right." She was almost certainly telling the truth, but to this day there's a part of me that can't quite believe her, it was that out of character. But maybe he could say it more easily to a relative stranger? I wish I could believe it 100% :-(
