Wow. I can't believe there are only twice as many slash fics as het fics. It feels more like 5:1 in my fandoms.

Though... does Character/Reader and Character/Original Female Character count? Because if those count, it's a shitload more. But those aren't het "ships" per se.

I think most fandoms either have a lot of F/M or none at all. So if you are not in one of the fandoms with a lot, you won't be seeing any.

Though AO3 is not whole universe of fic + my understanding is that ff.net and other archives aren't necessarily as slash heavy. Though it depends on fandom.

I do think the 'migratory' thing has more to do with the sense of fans following popular writers from fandom to fandom, although a perfectly good counter argument is 'why shouldn't people share interests with their friends or want to follow writers whose work they enjoy?'

Back on LJ I saw many popular authors jump ship to new fandoms the moment the reviews in the old one started to dry up, not the other way around, so much. Or if they were really inspired by a new fandom they'd test the waters a bit but if a large part of their following didn't follow suit they'd go back.

This was especially pronounced in the SMT fandom. It was tiny and everybody knew one another so occasionally you'd get this random BNF writing an (often very OOC) fic to see if it'd stick, which would get more reviews than anything else in the entire fandom to date from people nobody'd ever heard of. But when they didn't get the same caliber of adulation out of it as SPN or the other big hitters, they'd always leave after a few fics for greener pastures.

what's SMT?

Only fandom I know with that abbreviation is Shin Megami Tensei, a game series.

In my fandom there are 300+ het fics to 30 slash. That's not counting ff.net which I can't figure out how to easily tally, but I know it's mainly het there.

Yeah, it really depends in the fandom. Quite a few are overwhelmingly het filled. The huge difference in numbers is because there are a few juggernaut fandoms that are dominated by slash fic.

Nope! That depends entirely on the fandom, same as on AO3. Every big fandom I was when FFN was the undisputed juggernaut was overwhelmingly slash-dominated. On the whole, taking into account that some fandoms are bigger on one archive than the other, my experience is that the shipping demographics are pretty much equal.

I mean specifically for the one fandom. Believe me, it's het. The first three pages are all het pairing fic. I just don't know how to sort to get exact numbers.

Unless the OP of this thread typed it wrong, it's 1,223,075 M/M to 605,171 F/M. So more than double. :)

At first glance, I thought it was just double as well - I find it harder to parse numbers when the commas aren't included.

D'oh, sorry! Threadfail.

Uh, that's still only 2.02x as many m/m fics as f/m fics, whereas exactly double would be 2.00x as many. Nobody calling it double is confused; you're just being way too pedantic about what constitutes "more than double."
