This makes me sad because it invalidates all the other relationships Elrond has. He didn't fade after his brother died and wife left. He still has two living children in the twins. Plus, Elrond has always been a survivor. That's what I love about him.

I will say that Arwen and Elrond's moment in Return of the King (where they go together into the mountains to say goodbye) always gets me. The book does a good job (for me) of showing how much he loves both her and Aragorn, and how bittersweet it is for him.

Well...not necessarily? Theoretically speaking, I think there's often a straw that breaks the camel's back component when a person deals with a string of losses. So it's more of a "can't take any more" thing rather than a "this loss was worse than the other ones" thing.

I just don't see this for Elrond though. It doesn't ring true to his character.

ayrt

IA about that, but I'm just saying that the idea doesn't necessarily invalidate his other losses or relationships. Anyhow, the OP does say their headcanon is more about their own RL issues than the characters themselves.

I think it does invalidate the other relationships. Given the timing and what else he endured, I don't see leaving Arwen happily married as going to be something he would fade over, even if he knows he's never going to see her again. There were other moments that would be the last straw for him but they weren't. I can't see Arwen being that.

Personally, I don't think Arwen would be the straw though. I think teh real straw would be if neither of his sons sailed to Valinor. At the ends of the books (appendices included) it was never said whether Elladan and Elrohir sailed. One could go, one could stay, both could go, both could stay. My straw-that-broke-the-camel's-back scenario would be if both stayed in Middle-Earth and chose to be Men. Elrond left with a possible hope that one or both of his sons may follow him.
