Oh man. Any time someone whinges about how turrible and catty slash fans are I just remember Cloris vs Cloti and Shinji/Rei vs Shinji/Asuka and Ron/Hermione vs the Harmonians and laugh and laugh and laugh.

I've never seen slash ship wars as bad as het wars can get, probably for exactly the reason you identify: slash is almost never canon and slashers know it. Het shippers actually do have a chance of their ship becoming endgame AND BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES FIRE AT WILL

Haha right? I mostly ship slash, but as someone who dabbled Cloris and Zutara fandoms, I always found slash ship wars quite chill and friendly.

I think that's the problem - slash, sadly, almost never becomes canon, and that sucks. Everyone knows it, deep down. Het is almost always canon, and live triangles are almost always resolved, or at least you know for certain creators probably intended it.

I always boggle when people act like slash fandoms are so much worse when it comes to ship-wars or whatever, like yeah I've seen bad behaviour in slash corners for sure but as someone who was a het-shipper for the first 10 or so years of my fandom existence het ship-wars are something else. And it's exactly because each side(unless the ship really is out-there) has the very real chance of becoming canon and that just does something to the waters.

(Bleach fandom veteran here, good lord it was nutso years ago when it was bigger, I don't even want to know what it's like now).

Someone yesterday said Bleach was ending soon, so the fandom was going kind of crazy about what will be endgame.

Oh I can only imagine what it will be like and the shit-storm that will happen when the 'wrong' ship is endgame(although I've always figured that none will be but we'll see where that ends up).

It's a good thing in general, but man. I swear slash fandom got much worse when media started introducing actual non-het relationships into media because it seems like that's when the "My pairing would work better in canon than your pairing" mindset started seriously getting a foothold.

I think it's the sense of entitlement? Het shippers expect to be catered to so when you get the Clintasha shippers being blown off of in the MCU then it leads to a meltdown because they invested so much time on being the 'right' pairing.

Seriously, MCU fandom after AoU -
Clintasha: *incoherent screaming.*
Science Husbands: Aww, they made babies together!

Yeah it's definitely increased that kind of behaviour in slash and femslash fandom, I know I've seen more of it in recent years. But I also wouldn't get rid of my canon LGBT stuff either, just gotta roll with the bad, or at least hide in my corner lol.

I do think that for the most part ships that 100% have no chance of being canon are a little bit more chill, not always mind you because I've definitely run into ones that aren't, but the potential to become canon really does a number on fan expectations and entitlement.

Ideally I'd like for everyone to just take a step back and relax but let's face it that won't ever happen.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, absolutely didn't want to sound like canon LGTB stuff was a bad thing. Just... what's the opposite of a silver lining?

I've also seen that fandoms with a canon het pairing are often more chill. I mean I've never really seen a Tony/Pepper shipper harass a Tony slash shipper. I think they tend to be more aggro if their ship was ever in question though.

Oh no you didn't come off that way at all, sorry, I was agreeing with you that with getting canon gay comes an increase in fan entitlement in corners that previously wouldn't even think to make those arguments... Which is kind of cool now that I actually think on it(not that fans being shitty to each other is okay but a ship being LGBT isn't a guarantee that it will never ever happen anymore, not that it's even 50% likely in most cases but my bar is very low so yay, lol).

I do think that uncontested canon ships might be more chill but I also think the size of a fandom plays a part too, the less there are to stir up shit the less notice they'll get if they even try, but I've also come across some really nasty canon shippers too so it's a bit of a mixed bag of how lucky you get with your fandom. Ahhhh shipping.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
I think that might depend on the fandomn? Some of the meanest, nastiest fans I've ever encountered have been canon het shippers in mine, and they tend to be smugly self-righteous about it, too.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen this sort of thing with other het pairings in the MCU, too. I think it's a big part of why Brutasha and Staron get shit on so much. The loudest het shippers in my corner of the fandom have been so unbelievably awful that they've soured me on several pairings.

+999 to het ship wars.

I looked into the tumblr bleach tag and most of it was either a) ichiruki and/vs ichihime or meta comments about the ship war b) people coming back to see what's up with the last chapter like me. some outright said that they left because of the ship wars. Not that there's anything else of substance to tie up in one chapter of Bleach, but yeah.

Tbh I am totally interested in how it ends up ship-wise, not because I am hugely invested in the outcome(I won't lie tho if Ichiruki is endgame I'll be a little squeefull but I also ain't expecting that) but because I kind of want to see the meltdown.

I also kind of want the writer to troll the fandom by like having Ichigo end up with some random lady but from what I've heard he doesn't have much time to wrap this all up so most likely it'll just end, probably with Ichigo paired up with no one.

lol, Clerith vs. Cloti are still at it. And given the upcoming remake, they will probably go on for eternity...

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2016-08-07 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't get endgame wank. Why does it matter?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Because some people have to feel validated by canon that their ship is the "right" one?

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2016-08-07 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't that missing the entire fucking point of shipping?
