Is your advice to start being a dick in order to make friends????

TBH I think they're being cynical more than anything else. And it does seem easier for louder, more aggressive types to make friends. OTOH, they can also drain you a little. (But I mean... there's also seemingly sweet, quiet people who end up draining you. Socializing is hit or miss in general.)

Only a little cynical. Charismatic douchebags never seem to lack for friends, in my experience, while utterly sweet yet socially awkward people are so often lonely.

I'm honestly somewhat guilty of this, too. I mean, who would you rather hang out with: someone witty and clever who makes you laugh and never lacks for something entertaining or insightful to say whom you know would throw you under a bus for profit, or someone who forces you to make all of the conversation until you realize you're talking to yourself while staring into someone else's eyes >> and bores you to tears every time you hang out with them ...but they'd go out of their way to help you at any time if you needed it?

My solution's been to always do things with the latter type, something they enjoy, rather than sit around chatting with them like I would another friend. Or to invite them to groups with multiple people so that I don't have fill in 98% of the conversation. Because ideally, I'd rather be friends with good people.

Well, no, clearly it wasn't, though I suppose you're trying to make a point about ariakas' cynical observation. The point is being charismatic and entertaining can be more of a draw than being sweet and funny. You don't have to be a dick, but being charismatic and entertaining is a good idea.
