Re: Booze Question: Stocking a Home Bar?

It really, really, really, really depends on what you like to drink.

That said - just in terms of liquor and mixers - I tend to think that the essentials of a good home bar are going to start with whiskey + gin and/or vodka for liquors, and at least vermouth and bitters for mixers. That's the minimum. Decent-but-above-the-line brands are probably Bulleit for American whiskey, Hendricks or Beefeaters for gin (depending on whether you like it more floral or more pine-y); I don't care about brand for vodka and vermouth, and bitters are almost always going to be Angostura as your basic. Tequila, rum, scotch, brandy, and stuff like Cointreau or Campari should be added if you like drinking stuff with those things in them.

But really, it's mostly about what you like, and what you expect you'll want to serve to guests.

Also I wanted to say explicitly that even though whiskey / gin / vodka are usually your basic starters, there really isn't any reason at all to get them if you don't like them and don't expect to serve them to guests

Total fuckin' freedom, man
