Chinese film with a Chinese director and Chinese producers. Somehow equals...whitewashing. THOSE DAMN WHITEWASHING CHINESE!

In all fairness, there's a bigger issue here. Asians are severely underrepresented in American media. While it's not inherently wrong that a white person stars in a movie about China, how many roles get to star Chinese people that are about anywhere other than China? For that matter, how many big-name Asian actors still get roles in Hollywood? Lucy Liu and Jackie Chan do little to none these days. If Asians can't even star in big Hollywood movies about China... when do they get to star, or even feature.

Even with Hollywood money fueling the project, I would hesitate to characterize a film helmed primarily by Chinese talent to be representative of American media.

Except that this isn't really American media? It's a Chinese production, Zhang Yimou is a super-famous Chinese director, and yes, there are Chinese actors featured and starring.

Zhang Yimou: "Matt Damon is not playing a role that was originally conceived for a Chinese actor," he added. "The arrival of his character in our story is an important plot point. There are five major heroes in our story and he is one of them — the other four are all Chinese."
