Chiming in with everyone who says it's particular to what you like. If there's a good liquor store near you with a knowledgeable staff, tell them you're starting to stock a bar and ask what basics you should have. They'll probably ask what you like and find what's best for you.

Also, having pretty glasses is, while not essential, a really nice touch. I found some awesome vintage martini glasses with a cool spiral pattern for fifty cents each at a local thrift store. Vintage stores might have even nicer options, if you want some special. (Look up Culver glasses. I got a set of 8 for about $60 recently and they are gold and art deco-y and I love them. They class up any bar instantly.)
