In some places, the tap water isn't fit for consumption, and in others (say, Italy) nobody ever drinks it in a restaurant and asking for it will earn you weird looks.

But then I've never seen bottled water anywhere being as expensive as it is in the States, so usually I just get a bottle abroad.
