I'm genuinely surprised you manage to do this without hundreds of hours of effort. Most bad/OOC fics are unsalvageable, so you'd be better off just writing your own. I can't think of a single fic that would be drastically improved by simply removing a paragraph or switching some things around. The writer either has talent, puts in effort, and stays true to canon characterization... or they don't.

I'm not sure that I agree with that. Because it would imply that betas are generally useless as well, and I don't think that's true.

I thought betas mostly caught typos/poor constructed sentences/whatnot.

Or if they were to say "hey, this whole chapter doesn't work" or "this isn't going in an interesting direction" the author would put in the time and effort to rewrite the whole thing because it's their creation.

I can't imagine someone else putting in the time and effort of a total rewrite to make a shitty fic good and not just, say, writing their own good fic in the first place.

I mean, people write their own takes of a general narrative all the time. Even if you were in love with the author's idea but hated their execution, writing your own "version" of that idea is still your own fic.

I think OP is kind of talking about a fic where most of it is good and there's some moments that need patching or reworking? There's space between just fixing SPAG and doing a total rewrite.

"I thought betas mostly caught typos/poor constructed sentences/whatnot."

Most betas do only that, but then most betas aren't very good, IMO. A good beta will do more than just proofread your fic, but that's a lot of work and takes a good eye for editing... which is why there aren't many good betas.

I guess i can understand. I never really understood the whole secondary pairing n (smutty) fanfic anyway

As long as you're not being a jerk to the creator, that's cool. It's probably good writing / editing practice, tbh. (I don't think I'd personally have the patience to rework someone else's story just so it suited me.)

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I do too. I fix grammatical errors and download the new PDF to read on my phone. I understand that not everyone's an English major or even speaks it as a first language, and it's all fun. If I had time, I'd offer to be a beta. But when I want to have squees or get off, bad grammar distracts from that.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally get how something like that would be satisfying. But 'thrill of power'? Really? What the hell kind of power can you possibly get from doing something like this when you're the only one who sees/knows/is affected by it?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I'd like to know, considering that I posted something exactly like this a few weeks ago, minus the thrill of Power part.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
perhaps precisely because it IS secret?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-08 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno. The power you get from fixing something? OP didn't say it was a huge power rush, so maybe it's a very tiny thrill. But don't take my word for it, I do a victory fistpump every time I manage to put a stamp on an envelope so that the edges are perfectly parallel with the envelope. Nobody cares but me. :)

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds like fun, actually. What program(s) do you use?

Heeee! Yeah, I can see this working quite nicely in some fics. You do it for your own enjoyment (and little power trip) and apparently aren't being a jerk about it to the author or anything so....

Enjoy!

I do this too but usually with porn without plot fics. Sometimes if it's just smut and characters who already resemble the ones I want to read about, I CTRL+F & Replace their names and I'm good to go.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Twinzies!!

I also do this to fics that have a great plot and narrative but lots of grammatical mistakes.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here! I always feel a little guilty about it because I'm changing the author's work, but since I'm saving it for my personal reading pleasure, I figure what she doesn't know won't hurt her.

Like you said, as long as you aren't posting and taking credit for it, you do you!

(Anonymous) 2016-08-08 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'd do this, but it would take too much time/I'm lazy. Good idea though!

(Anonymous) 2016-08-08 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
I do this with art that's good but has a couple of dodgy bits like a bad hand or weird face. I edit out ugly watermarks too. I don't repost them anywhere though, obviously.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-08 11:14 am (UTC)(link)
I do the same thing in my head. I read a fic with an interesting premise but lackluster execution (or the "wrong" focus for myös taste) and I sort of daydream about how I'd make it better or more appearance to me.

That's what I do, too. *g*

(Anonymous) 2016-08-09 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I just did this to two different fics; one had specific details wrong and a couple of things misnamed, so I fixed them. The other had very minor bits of my NOTP (my favorite character's main pairing is one of my NOTPs), so I replaced the other character entirely (said character is supposed to be dead in the films anyway), since the character was only there for a pivotal but bit part in the end that could believably be assigned to someone else. And now the fixed versions are on my phone, where I can read them. Because they're the GOOD versions.

Sometimes I do this with fics where I like the premise and mostly the execution but the SPAG are fucked, although usually if the SPAG are bad, the fic itself is not likely to be good.
