A Darker Shade of Magic by V E Schwab. I've already read it and am rereading it because I loved it so much.

omg I LOVED THAT SO MUCH. Like a Chrestomanci book, but way more violent.

I'd say more adults. It's just a good book, and there aren't the YA tropes. If the summary sounds interesting to you, go for it!
