You ever have a slightly guilty moment of petty pleasure when a story you don't like doesn't do so well?

Particularly petty, in this instance, because my not liking it probably to a large extent comes down to YKINMK, though I do think it's fairly OOC and a bit preachy as well. But. Mostly YKINMK. Still can't help the little twinge of satisfaction that at 30k in, it's about breaking even with what some 2k oneshots get in this fandom.

I don't normally watch the stats of fics I don't like after I've backed out of them. I'm not sure why I'm so compelled with this one.

I can't bring myself to care, honestly. I also do not always find it logical to see which fics gets hits and which don't.

ayrt

Normally I wouldn't either. I guess this one just really rubbed me up the wrong way for some reason.

Not with fics. But all the time with movies.

yes, but only if the author is a cunt

No, but sometimes when a story that says "lol no one is going to read this" has almost no hits and zero comments I do.

gotta love those self fulfilling prophecies

I do this with fanart on Tumblr. I was very happy that a certain artwork by a certain person barely got reblogged by anyone in the fandom and pretty much only by porn blogs.

who?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-10 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
No but I get totally petty when someone I don't like irl's fics don't do well. We aren't even in the same fandom - but I get petty joy knowing my most popular fic (niche thing for a medium to small fandom) has way more kudos than hers (long fic for a big fandom)

Oh, yes. My favorite is when someone asks me to beta, then gets angry at my concrit and posts the fic as-is... and then gets a bunch of comments pointing out the exact same errors I pointed out. Sweet, sweet schadenfreude!

I get personal satisfaction when someone I don't like in fandom is ignored. Kind of.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-10 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Not precisely the same, but I'll admit to a similar feeling of schadenfreude when someone who loves to pose as an arbiter of writing quality got some concrit from a real live acquisitions editor at an actual major publishing house...and proceeded to spork his critique in her journal, with an attitude of "he was interrogating my text from the wrong perspective!" (It was obvious that he wasn't.)

Evil me got this glow of petty pleasure from realizing that she's so full of herself, she's incapable of learning. She'll probably always be terrible.

I had this on a kinkmeme some time ago. A fic that started alright turned into a OC centric xeno pregnancy fetish pile of shit with no warning at all and quite a few people noped the hell out - some of them quite vocally. I thought the fic was super bad and so I was kind of content to see other people dislike it as well.
