Was there ever an in-universe explanation for why they sleep in the floor?

Someone watched The Beatles movie "Help" one too many times?

In light of the secret, I was randomly re-watching 'Briar Rose' tonight - Netflix autostarted the next episode from when I watched last - and it was explained that the sleeping pods are designed to capture carbon dioxide and methane (everyone farts!) and recycle it back into the building environmental controls.

Then again, the character who said this was not the most reliable. :)

So they could get gassed with drugs to keep them happy and content. I think they say in Brair Rose. The pods could have been like Star Trek stasis units, but I guess the production department went with floor coffins.
