Yeah, but there are bad times.

I once came to the conclusion that I was going to break up with a guy a little bit before Christmas (which we both celebrate) and waited until a few days after. I wasn't really interacting with him in the interim, so it wasn't a big deal to wait a bit. I just didn't want to be the douche who broke up with someone on Christmas.

Fair enough, but let's be real here... everyone knows you were thinking about it and that the date is the only reason you waited. I'm not sure that's a huge benefit, tbh.

that's true. I was going on a bit of a tangent - I don't know the specifics of OP's situation.

Though I would argue that if it's "my SO's parent/sibling/best friend just died" it would be nice to wait a little bit - at least until after the funeral.
