Yeah, well said. In the beginning, in comparison to Walt, Jesse is the bad boy. We know he's kind of an asshole, and definitely a dumbass. But he never gets worse than that (except when, as you said, driven by circumstance - which in fact serves more to highlight his good intentions and how much he cares about others). Once you have Walt plummet to the bottom, Jesse seeming good by comparison is really no accident. Plus, having a front row seat to how much Walt fucks with his heads and screws him over again and again, it's hard not to feel sorry for him, even he had done far worse than he did in the series.

Jesse seeming good by comparison is really no accident.

Definitely. The show is about moral decay and the creation/evolution of a villain, and Jesse is a goalpost that never shifts. You're supposed to think he's bad at the beginning so that, when Walt sails right on past him and starts to use him, you come to realize that you had no idea what "bad" is.

Jesse was small time before Walt, and would've stayed small time without him, and the reason for that is there's actually a line he won't cross. In Walt's world, there are no lines.
