Jesse seeming good by comparison is really no accident.

Definitely. The show is about moral decay and the creation/evolution of a villain, and Jesse is a goalpost that never shifts. You're supposed to think he's bad at the beginning so that, when Walt sails right on past him and starts to use him, you come to realize that you had no idea what "bad" is.

Jesse was small time before Walt, and would've stayed small time without him, and the reason for that is there's actually a line he won't cross. In Walt's world, there are no lines.
