I actually miss when Mitt Romney was the Republican candidate.

Mostly a "confession" because that would be hard to state to people who hated him, and they wouldn't hear me out. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't a fan either. But he just pissed me off. Trump actually scares me.

He was someone I didn't agree with, and someone I thought held backward views, and someone who I thought was ignorant to how the lives of most Americans were like and what issues and struggles they dealt with. But I believed that he believed that what he was proposing would help people. I thought he was wrong, and dangerously wrong, but I never got the feeling that he was lying for personal gain or attention or power, he really thought he was helping people in his condescending, old-fashioned, good ol boy 1%er way.

Clinton and Trump, I don't get this feeling about. Clinton is a follower that believes in whatever is popular at the time, and Trump is making shit up as he goes along.

I hated him too, and thought a Romney presidency would be a real disaster. I'd take a hundred Romneys, now. Love the man. Getting "Mitt 5eva" stitched on a throw pillow

With Romney, the worst things he could do were exactly what he said he would do. Trump is liable to pull random shit he never even talked about when campaigning.

Well, I mean.

Romney was basically a candidate who respected the norms and institutions of American democracy. Trump, basically, is not. He is anti-liberal (in the political philosophy sense, not the American political orientation sense). That on its own is a profound difference, and it's exactly one of the things that makes Trump so dangerous.

I didn't like him either, but in hindsight... Fuck, me too.

No hate from me.

The thing that makes me scratch my head is that I lived in MA when he was governor, and he was one-of-those middle-of-the road R governors who helped more than he harmed. I mean, ACA was pretty much based on the MA health plan that Romney championed when he was governor.

So, his turn towards the insane (not to mention throwing the entire state under the bus) was utterly baffling to me. I mean, I wouldn't have voted for him even if he hadn't taken a turn for the insane, because Obama! But I'm still stunned that Romney managed to trash himself pretty thoroughly.

The thing about Trump's orange terrifying ass is that he not only makes me miss Insane!Romney, he also makes me miss McCain.

No, yeah, I totally get this. Romney was much less insane than Trump is, that's for damn sure.

It's pretty amazing to see how many prominent Republicans have been distancing themselves greatly from Trump lately. Mind, a cynical part of me suspects/knows that for some of them, it's a political strategy to hopefully benefit themselves in a few years' time if they try and run for president...

...but I honestly think most of them are legit embarrassed at and horrified by what the party has devolved into thanks to Trump and his supporters, too. And I do appreciate them taking the risk and speaking out where possible.
