I loved the first one, but the relationship angle felt very cringeworthy to me. :/

Same. I think it's the fact that she's FIFTEEN when she meets Holmes, who later becomes her husband. Ick.

It never felt organic to me. I mean, the author is clearly a skilled writer. All the characters are interesting, the plots, the writing, etc. But the story never developed the feelings between the characters enough to make me believe it and not feel creeped out by the suddenness, age gap, etc. A lot of people felt that way, so we're not the only ones!

I wish they had just stayed friends, mentor/student sort of thing. I liked that. Or, if it had to be romance, really drag it out over several stories in a slow burn so it feels like it's actually from the characters, not just slapped onto the story.

Yes, that's a good way to put it. I just never believed the relationship. Frankly, it's creepy to have a 15 year old heroine meet a 50-something man and have their apprentice/mentor relationship turn into romance, and King doesn't do a very credible job of it. Their married life looks exactly like a platonic partnership except for a few obligatory mentions of sexytimes that again, don't feel very natural or believable. It's as if the author herself suddenly remembered that oh yeah, they're supposedly a married couple who are in love and attracted to one another! Better mention they had sex.

OK, so I did a quick check on Goodreads. We're talking about The Beekeeper's Apprentice + sequels, yes? LOL, a 4.08 rating for a synopsis that sounds like straight-up garbage.
