I needed a hair cut and I was broke, so my friend offered to cut it for free. I haven't had it cut in a while and I knew she'd need to trim at least three inches off because of the split ends, but she ended up cutting seven inches off and I really hate how short it feels now.

I told her I didn't want it cut too much because I like having long hair, but she said it was unhealthy because it hadn't been cut for so long and it needed to be cut so it could grow stronger.

Er, no offense to your friend but I don't think that's how hair works. Cutting off split ends makes one's hair look better overall, but it doesn't make the remaining hair stronger or weaker, and it doesn't have any impact on new hair growth. It's not like pruning a rosebush.
