How did he ruin a character that he has played since the beginning?

I'm pretty sure they mean Watson in general.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-11 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing OP meant that learning about comments he made as the show went on ruined the character, not his performance from the start.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-11 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I see all the various adaptations as their own thing, so one version of the character can never ruin the original or any of the others for me. I just ignore what I don't like.

I liked the show in itself, but he doesn't feel like a Watson to me, so I kind of get it.

His Watson is pretty much the thing that annoyed me most about the show.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-11 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Tbh i thought he was the best thing about that series

(Anonymous) 2016-08-11 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
+1 He's the only reason I'm still watching.

If you let one adaptation ruin a character that has been adapted dozens of times, that is pretty sad.

I read it as literally just John within the show.

I just don't mentally count BBC Sherlock and John as Holmes and Watson. They're just over there doing their own thing, they don't count.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-11 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That's exactly how I think about Elementary.

OP here

(Anonymous) 2016-08-11 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I...didn't mean John Watson the character in all iterations. I just meant I liked Sherlock's John when I started watching the show, and once I heard Martin Freeman say a lot of awful stuff I couldn't enjoy that character the same way anymore.

For the record, I don't care much about John Watson the character, so there wouldn't be much there to ruin.

Well, one thing I'm taking away from this thread is that I should never read any Freeman interview. He plays a lot of characters I like.

This was my understanding of the secret and I had the same experience.

The character John Watson has always been a little eh for me anyway, but the way Freeman characterized him annoyed me anyway. Such a pissy fellow.

I prefer Liu's sass or Jude Law's class.

I wish I didn't know exactly what you mean. :(

(Anonymous) 2016-08-12 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Give me Granada!Watson and Lucy Liu's Watson anytime over Martin's.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-12 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Give me Granada!Watson

Either of them! Or maybe both... *chinstroke*

(Anonymous) 2016-08-12 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
I read this as Grandma!Watson and was both puzzled and intrigued.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-12 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Worst fucking Watson.

Lol, without any investment in either the originals or Sherlock, I recently got around to reading a few of ACD's texts and I was surprised how close in tone Watson is written in Sherlock, and that I actually found MF's depiction of him pretty accurate.
So I guess I don't really get how he "ruined" the character.
(He was dreadfully himself as Bilbo, though, and I hated him there, but that was probably partly the director's fault)

(Anonymous) 2016-08-12 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I know how you feel, OP. I really, really loved John in A Study in Pink - in fact he was a significant part of what made the series click with me at first. But then I discovered that Martin Freeman is an angry, unpleasant little man, and that took the shine off a little.

And then I feel like the directors stopped reigning Martin in. Or maybe they actively started encouraging him to play John more like himself, IDK. But the character seems to become more and more like Martin Freeman (at least the way he comes off in interviews) and less like the original John of ASiP with each new episode we get. I even suspect that Moffat and Gatiss have started letting their knowledge of Martin's character affect the way they write John's character.

It sucks. :(
