I hate all the AU - modern setting fic for my fantasy fandom. I'm ok with letting people do fandom their way, I just hate how popular that AU is and that there's more than twice as much of it than fic set in the canon universe.

I'm not currently in a fantasy fandom, but I can see this. You're taking away a lot of what makes the source material fun and just writing about people in high school or whatever.

I do not want to read about high schoolers or baristas, I've been both and they SUCK ALL THE BALLS, I want to read about jedi or hunters or sword-wielding badasses.

Most of the characters in my main fandom right now are quite young, so I kinda understand where the HS/college AUs come from. And BDSM AUs are just because somebody wanted to write a bunch of BDSM porn, vaguely related to some characters we know. It's the fucking werewolf AUs I don't get, especially why there are so many of them!

I'm also in the tiny fandom for a horror film and 70% of the fics for it are fluffy AUs. I don't think there are ANY (AU or non) fics posted that really get into the dark, disturbing stuff in the film and why the characters are fucked up. Also there's canon dubcon and most fandoms would be all over it, but I guess the people who are into that haven't seen it?
