Why is fic dialogue all SO BAD? People don't talk that way! Have you fuckers never had a conversation before?! I know. It's probably all written by the 15 and younger set, and I should cut them some slack.

BUT IT'S JUST SHIT! AND KUDOSED TO HELL AND BACK.

If I told the asshole what he needed to do once, I told him ten times. Finally I sent him to see my boss. Who explained it once. THEN the asshole understood.

I hate people and I need a new job. :(

Dialogue is fucking hard to write, man

Huh. I just don't see it. Narrative and action are way harder than two people talking, which pretty much everybody does every day.

If someone recorded my daily conversations, they'd probably be quite boring to read. The challenge of dialogue is to write something that feels real, while still being punched up and entertaining.

LOL yeah. Does anyone enjoy reading lots of monosyllables, run-on sentences, or half-formed statements ending in ellipses?

Sure but dialogue in someone else's voice us a lot different than in your own

Sounds like people need to spend more time with their source material.

I used to feel like this. Nowadays when I write, the dialogue comes a lot easier to me and the actions are harder to express.

I hate all the AU - modern setting fic for my fantasy fandom. I'm ok with letting people do fandom their way, I just hate how popular that AU is and that there's more than twice as much of it than fic set in the canon universe.

I'm not currently in a fantasy fandom, but I can see this. You're taking away a lot of what makes the source material fun and just writing about people in high school or whatever.

I do not want to read about high schoolers or baristas, I've been both and they SUCK ALL THE BALLS, I want to read about jedi or hunters or sword-wielding badasses.

Most of the characters in my main fandom right now are quite young, so I kinda understand where the HS/college AUs come from. And BDSM AUs are just because somebody wanted to write a bunch of BDSM porn, vaguely related to some characters we know. It's the fucking werewolf AUs I don't get, especially why there are so many of them!

I'm also in the tiny fandom for a horror film and 70% of the fics for it are fluffy AUs. I don't think there are ANY (AU or non) fics posted that really get into the dark, disturbing stuff in the film and why the characters are fucked up. Also there's canon dubcon and most fandoms would be all over it, but I guess the people who are into that haven't seen it?

I just read a fic that - besides being wildly OOC from start to finish- also had one of the hugest disconnects between show and tell I've ever seen. You really noticed that the author wanted the reader to perceive the characters in a very certain way (especially where it came to who was in the right and who in the wrong) but the way the characters were written and the way they behaved gave a completely contrary impression. If this had been done intentionally, it would have been a really great example of an unreliable narrator but it definitely wasn't intentional.
