I've spent two weeks trying to think of a way to get out of my cousin's birthday party. A 31 year old should not still be having such elaborate birthday parties.

Are they throwing it for themselves? Because at 31 you have the right to do whatever the fuck you want.

Though you shouldn't feel obligated to go just 'because family' if you're not close with them.

Why do you need to think up an elaborate excuse? They're usually a bad idea, because giving explanations just makes other people try to find a way around them. Just tell people sorry, you can't make it but you hope everyone has a great time and send your cousin a birthday card.

I have elaborate birthday parties, and will continue to do so. But like, if you're both adults, "I can't make it" should suffice.

Unless they're playing pin the tail on the donkey or musical chairs (which is still cool), who cares what they do to celebrate living.

I genuinely like and most playing both of those games (especially musical chairs) and would be super excited to go to a party that had them. Also a piñata.

Man, as someone who never went to a party as a kid that had a piñata, I'd be ecstatic to go to one now that had one.

I hope you get the chance! Or even throw one. They are so much fun.

Also when I was in 8th grade our Spanish class made piñatas as an end-of-the-year celebration and busted them all up in class and ate lots of candy. It is an amazing memory.

My thoughts on this are: if they want to throw a birthday party, go for it, you can do whatever you want at any age.

That said, you have no reason to make up a excuse, just say you can't go and that's that. You're under no obligation to attend. Make plans with a friend if you absolutely need an excuse.

As long as the 31 year old is paying for it and no one's harmed, they should celebrate their birthday however they want, IMO. You don't have to go, though.
