I always thought I would never be able to get along with racists. Turns out I can work with them as long as they're not being racist against me personally. I am conflicted.

You kind of should be, but honestly what would you say besides "Ha, no."?

it's a shame we have to let racists just go on with their lives to 'keep the peace'

I recently found out I can make common cause with racism. I'm completely onboard with the Brexiteers demanding the expulsion of all foreigners from England even if it means all the OAPs in the Costa Del Crumbly or the Ponces in Provence get shipped back here. They think it will save the country, I know it will cause a massive implosion and untold misery. I'm happy going along with their racism to prove that though. I won't join it, but I'll do nothing to stop it. I figure the faster we can make the country collapse the sooner we can apply to rejoin the EU without all the opt outs or rebates.

I.. disagree with so much of what you're saying but I'm just so tired of the whole subject.

What? You want to be in the Eurozone?

Anything which dismantles English institutions is a positive thing as far as I am concerned.

yes because no other country has EVER had massive problems with violence and the destruction of their entire societies after their national institutions were dismantled

Well, true, we've had a lot of empirical evidence to support that. Mostly thanks to the English going around and dismantling national institutions as it happens but --

I'd class that as a feature, not a bug if it happen. England needs another good kicking to make it play nice with the rest of the world.

This is why I don't use words like "racist" and "sexist" as nouns, and only as adjectives to describe certain behaviors. People are more than that, no matter how awful some parts of them are.

Being able to work with people who hold different viewpoints than yourself is a sign of maturity.

True, but racism isn't something people should just have to take as a 'different viewpoint'.

I agree. In a perfect world her workplace wouldn't tolerate that stuff. But this isn't a perfect world and most of us will have to work with people who hold views we find abhorrent or morally wrong. As I see it your choices are to either suck it up until you find a better place, or quit and not have money to pay your bills.

like don't engage in fisticuffs or anything but a "Really?" or talking over them about the work.

I think it's a social survival mechanism. Humans need to be able to interact with other humans for society to function, even if there is disagreement.

Well, racists aren't necessarily conspicuously racist all the time. There are lots of casual racists who are fine to work with and you might never know they're racist until they say something like, "You know, I think Trump has a good idea about that wall on the Mexican border..."

It doesn't mean they kick puppies to death on a daily basis, it's just that they're assholes about one specific issue.
