I think I'm becoming one of those constantly angry SJ people on tumblr :/

Yeah, just wait until you become one of the burned out and bitter ones though. There is nothing worse than a former idealist.

Oh I am definitely already there. I just think most people can't or don't want to learn.

Why are you trying to change other people? Do you like it when people do that to you? Do you respond well to that?

I don't just start randomly talking to someone about SJ, lol.

It's like being in a conversation and someone says a slur. "Really? Why a word that demeans a group?"

"Other people say it / I don't mean it in a bad way!"

People get defensive, but they stay defensive no matter what you do to explain. This isn't something meaningless like changing someone's personal style, it's going "Hey, that's not cool and it's offensive."

Yes, if you're going to call people out, they're going to get defensive.

Do you like getting called out?

Who does? But even if you're being polite, even if you're not shaming anyone on a global stage, most people they're not going to change because their feelings at that moment > being respectful of others.

What point are you trying to arrive at? That there's no good way to make social change?

The point I'm trying to make is that it's futile to try to change other people. They will only resent your attempts to do so. This is Relationships 101. if you expect to effect change by calling others out, then be prepared to do little more than create resentments and divisions and not be liked very much. If you're actually interested in effecting change, try volunteering to help others in need rather than preaching to those who don't want to change.

Fair enough. I've had a fair amount of people talking about how much following me has taught them stuff, but I never knew they were there and didn't have to say anything, so I can see that point. People will either learn and be better or they won't.

I had to take a break from Tumblr for exactly that reason. I also spent a month not reading the news too. It's been marvellous.

I think, if you are: be aware you're not being counterproductive to that which you're trying to accomplish.

Isn't that a given?

Well, not per definition, but it's very likely.

Oh man, that's an unpleasant feeling. I know I've had to kinda be careful about where I hang online, and for how long, because constantly blowing gaskets is just unpleasant. (Not to mention counterproductive for me; I'm not one of those people who use anger productively, most of the time. I just STEW.)

Take a break, man. Injustice is frustrating and soul crushing, but over exposure just makes you apathetic and bitter.

Also maybe try volunteering. It's nice to see your actions actually have an direct and tangible impact.

I've found that it's not possible to be SJ and not be perceived as angry by at least a percentage of anti-SJ. People who are angered by SJ often take it as a given that anyone who supports SJ must be equally angry, and no matter how even you keep your tone, they'll find ways to interpret you as being furious.

....I thought fighting for social justice inherently implied that you were angry about the status quo.

Not at all. I simply like people, so I speak up when some people are treated unfairly. It's not my intention to berate the people I'm speaking to.

Put down tumblr, step away for a while, and evaluate how you actually want to pick your battles before going back.

The biggest problem with tumblr-style SJ is that it fosters a mentality where focusing your energy is considered a vice, and not a necessary survival mechanism. So people who get caught up in the culture wind up either being constantly angry because they've been trained to respond to everything with the exact same intensity and that excusing oneself from a conversation is only to be done when one has exhausted all of one's faculties, or burning the fuck out and becoming bitter and hateful towards all sides of the argument because it's impossible to sustain that breakneck pace indefinitely.
