I hate driving. Even when I'm going some place fun, I hate it. I especially hate driving people around and I want to tell them they should either learn how to drive, take the bus, or at least give me gas money, but I feel awful every time I try to tell them.

It's totally fair to ask for gas money, especially if they're not returning the favor.

Set and enforce boundaries, anon. You may think it'll be awful, but you'll feel much happier about it in the long run and you run less risk of ruining friendships by seething in resentment about it every time you give in. Learning to say no is a skill every person should acquire.

Don't let people take advantage of you. When you let people take you for granted by not telling them you're not a free taxi service, they start feeling like they're entitled to it. YOU are doing THEM a huge favor, and you can decide that you no longer want to do that favor - especially for people who aren't grateful or nice about it. And you know what? Not offering to chip in some gas money is a shitty thing to do.
