I'm seriously thinking of applying for a job aboard, but it basically does mean leaving quite literally everything behind.

I did it a year ago and have no regrets. But I don't think it's for everyone. It's one of the most drastic changes you can make to your life and this no room for doubt. Look around you: can you get up right now and walk away forever without looking back? Then do it. If you can't, then don't.

Thing is, it doesn't have to be forever.

Like, I could do if for a year or two, getting experience, have a bit of an adventure.

I mean there's a lot of shit that would be cumbersome - I'd have to sell my car and get bank stuff in order. But, I don't really own property. I can leave some personal belonging at my parents. My main 3 issues are: I have a boyfriend. I have a dad who has cancer and him dying while I'm gone would be something I'd find terrible. I started an acting course about a year ago that I do feel emotionally invested in.

Anything else...I can probably deal with. Bt those are 3 pretty big cons.

The pro's are that this job is actually relevant to my skills and ambitions, and would look good on my cv even if it didn't work out. That and I loathe my current job to the point it's making me mentally ill. Oh, and it's like over twice the money. I could just rent a bare-bones apartment and save cash every month.

It sounds to me like the time isn't right but obviously that's not my call. I couldn't have done it though under those circumstances. My mother is sick but she always has been and they can afford to fly me home if she gets really bad. And we never got along until I moved to the other side of the world so I don't have the same emotional investment in my family that others seem to.

The time is never right, though. The problem is I can linger here for 2 more years in a shitty job, just to finish my acting thing and see how my dad goes...and 2 years down the line the acting thing might have gone nowhere, and my dad might be in remission for the 4th time and I'm still at a status quo.

Thing with this job is that I actually know someone there who might get me in.

I feel like it's a 60% yes, it's just a hassle, and I'm bad with dealing with that.

I hope you can find whatever it is you need to make a decision! It's definitely worth the hassle, imho. I've never been so happy in my life and wish I had done it sooner. I spent 15 years on what ifs, so I get what you mean about the time never being right.

What would you like to do abroad?

I taught English abroad for awhile, but as an American, there are limited places to go and get a work visa!

I would be a content writer for a company that has online games (and gambling, let's be honest), but the thing is they're specifically looking for people with my language skills. I'm guessing they're based abroad because tax/living cost reasons.

OT: I interpreted "a job aboard" as swabbing the deck on a cruise ship.

If it's possible then DO IT!

Not only does it open up a much wider world of networking connections (people who travel tend to have money, connecting with them is a great way to open doors to better your own situation), but it also demonstrates to any potential future employers that you're good enough to be picked out of an international pool and are willing to think big about your own career and life experiences.
