I've had people tell me that they would rather die than live like I do. And I don't even think I'm that bad off.

I never know how to respond to that one. It's like people don't stop to think about how awkward and rude that it to say to someone, and you're expected to agree with them.

I don't know either. Before I've said that I'm actually pretty happy with my life despite the pain but people never seem to believe me that it's possible to be in constant pain but not constant misery. I mean, there are times when it's bad and it sucks but mostly it's just kind of there.

Yes! You adjust. It does suck, but when you have days with a normal level of pain and not a really bad level of pain, you just sort of get on with things and enjoy what you can do. I'm retired, not wallowing.

*nods* People don't always get that pain and suffering are actually 2 different things (even if they're often connected).

Oh wow geez that's a horrible thing to say to someone.

And in a way it's the equivalent of a backhanded "you're so brave to be seen doing this/wearing that" only even worse because it's for a condition you have no control over.

Yeah I don't know why people think that's a good thing to say to someone but it happens.

That's part of why I'd like to see more depictions of people who have adjusted to their disabilities. Not people who go above and beyond and become an inspiration but people who have just learned to live with some difficulties and it's not the main part of their story. You can't always overcome it but that doesn't mean the only other option is wallowing in misery.

Then you're stronger than them. I don't mean it in a "You're so inspirational!" way. You're actually stronger than those shallow, easy living dipsticks.
