Oh wow geez that's a horrible thing to say to someone.

And in a way it's the equivalent of a backhanded "you're so brave to be seen doing this/wearing that" only even worse because it's for a condition you have no control over.

Yeah I don't know why people think that's a good thing to say to someone but it happens.

That's part of why I'd like to see more depictions of people who have adjusted to their disabilities. Not people who go above and beyond and become an inspiration but people who have just learned to live with some difficulties and it's not the main part of their story. You can't always overcome it but that doesn't mean the only other option is wallowing in misery.
