The way I saw it, all three of the adults were not exactly the cream of the crop, morals-wise. Miss J was only supposed to be perfect from Melanie's perspective; from an impartial view, she's no better than Parks or anyone else at that base (and Dr. Caldwell had to be the villain of course, so there you go)

Yes, Miss Justineau is definitely morally flawed, too. It's just she's the only adult in Melanie's life who's nice to her. Of course Melanie thinks she's perfect. But we're supposed to see that both she and Dr Caldwell are out of their depths. Miss J's past contains some pretty poor decision-making, and Dr Caldwell is traumatised, has an inferiority complex, and can't deal with the fact that she's still alive because she wasn't good enough to be picked for the A team of research scientists.

And neither of them are the main character. The main character is Melanie.

Yeah, I don't think the secret is misogynist but it does seem to be puzzled that people could like a book where the main characters, who in this case are women, are flawed people who don't always make good decisions. Whereas that's one of the things I liked about the book, esp the scientist character.

I agree with the post I am replying to in every respect. I liked the book lots, liked the characters fine despite their imperfections, and recommend the author in general, but not to the OP because the characters in the series he wrote as Mike Carey are also flawed.
