If you're tracing your own art, you're not doing anything wrong. As long as you're not tracing and stealing credit for someone else's art you should be fine.

As someone who's used animation with onion skin functions, it's not really that different to import bits of your own art, trace off that and alter as needed.

I don't know, but I've encountered viewpoints of "tracing of any kind is wrong" due to people who trace to steal art. And some art communities that still seem to view tracing and stealing as the same thing.

Well, that is just stupid. It is tracing your own work. You can't steal from yourself!
